New Deal Lesson Plan

Standards: CA-11.6.4.
Overview:
In this
lesson we are going to go to learn about Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New
Deal. This is a very complex topic and it will take us 2-3 days to get through
the lesson. After the lesson you will be able to discuss the positives and negatives
of the New Deal and you will have synthesized both primary and secondary source
information to formulate your own opinion on the New Deal and the expansion of government
during the great depression. This lesson will also serve as an introduction the
next lesson where we will further discuss the documents found in step three.
Warm up-
5 points
We have
learned about how the great depression happened and what it was earlier in this
unit. We also learned about Herbert Hoover and his failed attempts at fixing
the major economic crisis. Now we are going to look President Franklin Delano
Roosevelt and more specifically at his new deal.
1.
Write 2-4 sentences on what you know about FDR
and the New Deal. Give specifics about any new deal programs that you know

While these programs may seem
great, there were many that disagreed with the effectiveness and scope of
President Roosevelt’s policies. We will review some of the opposition to the
new deal. Follow the links on the worksheet and answer the questions provided.
We will discuss your findings on the New Deal in class next time and you will
argue your point of view on the question of success in the New Deal.

Conclusion
As
we have seen the great depression was a very tough time in our nation’s
history. Roosevelt’s policies were meant to keep people working because there
were far too few jobs to go around. Additionally many new regulations were put
into place to insure something like the great depression would not happen
again. We have also learned that even though Roosevelt was a very popular
president he still had his critics and political opponents. This lesson has
many great events that you can base your historical interest project on. The
WPA produced many murals and if you are interested in art you can make a WPA mural.
There are many new deal projects locally that you can visit and learn about as
well.

Extra Credit Opportunity
Watch the video on the dust bowl and write a fictional letter to a loved one pretending you were a person living in the 1930s and were effected by the dust bowl in some way. Describe where you live, how the dust bowl effected you, what the effects were for you and your loved ones, how it effected your career or education, there are many things you can write about!
